Carcavegia

Carcavegia, an event of very ancient origins, perhaps of Celtic origin, has mysterious meanings and it is recalled in Premosello Chiovenda, in Colloro and in other villages of Val d’Ossola. According to tradition, the boys, three days before the Epiphany, gather at the call of the horn, played by their leader. Each boy has a cow bell of a particular type and size, called ciòcc, fastened to his waist. All together they ring the cow bells in the streets of the village and go from house to house asking for wood for the fire. With the wood a great pyre is made, on which two puppets with human features (al vècc and la vegia - the old man and the old woman) stand tall, which are set on fire on the evening of January 5, the eve of Epiphany. The puppets carry two signs with the names and the year of birth of the two oldest inhabitants in the village, as a wish for a long life. In Premosello Chiovenda the fire is lit in the pebbly shore of the Riale, while in Colloro in a panoramic place on the unpaved road leading to Ronchi. The two fires, lit at the same time, rival for grandeur.
