At the beginning of the 20th century, the need for a new church was deeply felt due to the progressive abandonment of the mountain villages by the population and the growing settlement on the plain. Since the mountain church of San Lorenzo al Pozzo was far from the centre of the village, an oratory was built in 1925 from a room in the building of the Kindergarten, where  holy masses were celebrated except for the religious solemnities that took place in the old parish church. The project for the construction of a new sacred building was accomplished on the plain only in the second post-war period.

The church was designed by the Roman architect Renato Costa and in 1958 the excavations began, with the work of the men from Cosasca, equipped with pickaxe and shovel, to prepare the foundations. The expensive works could be guaranteed thanks to the contributions of the inhabitants of Cosasca and many families of Domodossola, to the state and church grants, to the proceeds of the festivals organized by the priests, but also through the donations of materials from private citizens. The church was consecrated on May 1, 1965.
