Canapa

In the past, the Cannabis Sativa was widely cultivated on the territory. A very resistant textile fibre was obtained from its long stems; it was particularly suitable for manufacturing underclothes and household linen, ropes and sacks. After the harvest, the stems were left to macerate in bunches in the so-called püzz del canu, located in the water-rich areas of the village, for at least 10 days, then they were dried, crushed and beaten to separate the fibres from the hardest parts. Then the material was cleaned and combed, thus becoming raw material for different uses. In Cossogno there were about ten maceration tanks, one of which was reactivated by the Valgrande Cooperative Society for educational and environmental activities. There were also four maceration tanks in Cicogna and one in Ungiasca.
