Lüt is the name of a small mountain pasture, which hosted the cattle only in spring and autumn: it is situated at almost 800 meters above Colloro di Premosello, at the entrance to the valley of the Rio Crot, crossed by the mule track leading to Val Grande, through the  Colma and Usciolo Passes.

Alpe Lüt, or better Alpe Alupta, appeared for the first time in a document of 1014 found in the archives of the Benedictine monastery of San Graciniano in Arona and related to a donation of a property.

In the interpretation made by Enrico Rizzi, who discovered the previously unpublished document, with the term “Alpe Alupta” he probably meant not only the current mountain pasture of Lüt, but also the whole valley behind, up to the Colma.

There is precise historical information about the origin of the small Marian sanctuary, starting from the original old chapel that stood on the plateau not far from the mule track that goes up from Colloro; today the chapel is incorporated in the sacred building.

According to tradition, some young people of the village, who left the Val Grande when they were called to arms on the occasion of the Second War of Independence, stopped near the small chapel and vowed to restore it if they had returned home safe and sound from the war.

And so it was, as testified by the image of the Virgin of the Annunciation– even if the fresco of the Madonna delle Grazie had been ordered – painted by the painter Andrea Monti of  Anzola in 1859, for a vow of some veterans of the Second War of Independence.

The small portico on the front was built by the family of the corporal Pio Bionda, as a vow to hope the return – never happened – of the relative who was reported missing during the battle of Adua in Africa in 1896.

During the World War I, the Ethiopian Campaign and the World War II, the small chapel became the destination of devoted pilgrimages, coming from the lower Ossola, of soldiers and family members who invoked the Marian protection for the fighters on the front.

After the Great War the building was enlarged and in 1924 there was the solemn blessing of the chapel by the priest Don Giovanni del Boca, who was already a military chaplain on the front and was decorated with the Military Value.

At the end of the World War II, which from September 1943 to April 1945 was also fought here, the arch. Paul Vietti Violi designed the big mausoleum-ossuary, a sort of “Redipuglia of the resistance of Ossola”, to be built in Lüt, a place of memories and devotion for the fighters and veterans of all wars, but also the entrance to Val Grande, the place where the tragic mopping up of June 1944 took place and where, after the armistice of September 8 1943, the partisan Brigade, later “Valdossola” Division, was established around Major Dionigi Superti, the director of a forest company operating in the territory.

In 1952 the small chapel was enlarged once again and transformed into a real church, with the addition of the three-arch portico, the only complete element in the greatest design of architect Vietti Violi. The monument-fountain dates back to 1962, with the bas-relief by Giovanni Primatesta, a work desired and prepared by Giuseppe Primatesta, “Pep Cìot”, Knight of Vittorio Veneto, sacristan and enthusiastic animator of the mountain oratory, deservedly remembered by a tombstone outside the church. The metal cross dates back to 1968: it was placed by the Pro Loco on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley, with two epigraphs in memory respectively of all the Fallen and the Partisans of  the “Valdossola”  Division. This cross was restored later by the Lüt Committee in 1987. On the occasion of the ceremony on August 4, 1968, the stone field altar near the fountain was inaugurated for outdoor celebrations.  In September 1978 the jeep trail was inaugurated, which reached the meadows of Lüt and was extended only in the 1980s to connect the cheese huts of the Alpe to the church.

In 1982, with the establishment of a Lüt Restoration Committee, the church was restored with the following works: the raising of a portion of the roof to align it with the big central one, the reconstruction of the roof of the bell tower, the construction of a new altar of masonry and serizzo, the replacement of the entrance door, the painting of the building and the repairs of the surrounding area.

The flag-raising pole, dating back to 1988, relating to the 70th anniversary of the end of the Great War, was  placed on the rocky outcrop near the white chapel defined by Don Remigio Biancossi in one of his poems "... almost a lamb who lost the flock, at the entrance to the wide Valgrande ... ".

The Lüt Restoration Committee, which carried out the reforestation in 1989 in the area surrounding the small church, continued its work, also taking care of the lighting system of the oratory, in particular on the eve of every religious celebration and during some ceremonies.

Since 1998 the traditional festival of Lüt has been organised by the Consorzio Montano and held, as originally, on a Sunday at the beginning of September, while in 2012 a modern bivouac was inaugurated, a reference point for the event and for the visitors of the Alpe.
